Pain medicine overview

What could happen if I take more than the dose directed on the pack?

Pain relievers with codeine are effective for relieving strong pain. Taking more than the dose directed on the pack may lead you to develop a reliance on these medicines. A reliance can lead to addiction and can result in serious harm.

It is important that you follow the directions on the pack. Codeine based pain relievers should be used to provide temporary relief of strong pain. Medicines containing codeine are only available from your pharmacist. Your pharmacist is there to help you with any questions or concerns you may have.

Over-the-counter pain relieving medicines are intended to be taken at the lowest dose for the shortest period of time. If you continue to experience strong pain after the recommended period (usually three days) it is important to talk with your pharmacist or visit your doctor as soon as possible.

Be aware of the side effects*

Be aware of what could happen if you misuse strong pain relievers. Remember, these should be used for temporary relief of strong pain. Follow the directions on the pack, which tell you:

  • the recommended dose:
  • who is suitable for the medicine; and
  • when not to take the medicine.

It is important to check the active ingredient (for example paracetamol or acetaminophen– in products like Panadol®– and ibuprofen – in products like Nurofen® in all codeine combined medicines and discuss these with your pharmacist. It is also important to check the active ingredients in other medicines including prescription medicines you may be taking with your pharmacist. Your pharmacist will advise if there are potential interactions (possible complications that can occur when different types of medicines are taken at the same time) between the various medicines you are taking.
